Tribal Portraits by Nikita Mistry
15 July - 18 August 2025
Salisbury Community Hub - Level 1
Nikita Mistry, an emerging artist passionate about creating expressive tribal portraits that celebrate culture, identity, and heritage. My journey into art began two years ago as a form of self-therapy. What started with colouring books soon evolved into a deep love for oil pastels—a medium that now defines my artistic voice.I focus on portraying tribal figures, capturing their emotions, traditions, and strength through rich, vibrant colours. Each stroke and shade carries meaning, reflecting the stories and cultural essence of my subjects. My greatest inspiration comes from the Omo Valley tribes of Ethiopia, especially the Mursi women. Their use of face paint, lip plates, and ear stretching represents beauty, strength, fertility, and readiness for marriage—symbols I strive to honour in my work.I find immense joy in layering and blending pastels, then applying tribal designs with a stick. This process feels deeply spiritual, like the tribe’s ritual of painting one another—feeding my artistic soul. I’m also inspired by photographer Giovanna Aryafara, whose images bring these cultures vividly to life.Currently studying art therapy, I believe in art’s power to heal and connect. Through my work, I aim to spark reflection, dialogue, and appreciation for diverse traditions.
