John and Val (Cycle Salisbury)

Read how local couple John and Val have improved their wellbeing by being involved in the Cycle Salisbury Social Rides program in this Autumn 2014 Aware article.

‘You have no idea how much being a part of the Cycle Salisbury Social Rides has meant to me – it has changed my life and wellbeing in so many ways and I can’t wait for more involvement in 2015.

I have been a proud resident of Salisbury for 25 years, yet in the last 6 months or so I have experienced the greatest benefits of our area, the local parks, bike/walking trails, gym equipment and so much more. Thank you to Salisbury Council and all those involved in this program for providing the most fun way of enjoying the outdoors, exercise and good friendships – all whilst being in my own ‘backyard’. Simone, Paralowie (December 2014)

Olwyn’s Testimonial

Community Healthy Living Well Testimonials Olwyn

Olwyn attended the WiseMove program coordinated by Salisbury Primary Health Care services at Para Hills in early 2011.

She has the following to say about the WiseMove program:

The exercise parts of the course itself were great as they suited the different ability levels of people there and the WiseMove program has motivated me to do more exercise.

It exercised my brain as well as my body and it was social – we even had lunch together. It was run in a relaxed & personable manner and people were able to express their views without feeling uncomfortable – you were made to feel that your opinions were valued.’

Olwyn’s advice: ‘Get out of the house and go to something for YOU, learn new things, make new friends

Alan’s Testimonial

Community Healthy Living Well Testimonials Alan

Alan Nelson is a Volunteer Walk Organiser for Heart Foundation Walking at Morella Community Centre on a Wednesday morning. This is something he says that has changed his life.

“I gave up alcohol and cigarettes about four years ago as I was just fed up with my lifestyle,” explains Alan. “I used to be a keen runner and volleyball player but I hadn’t done any physical activity for a number of years and found that I was quite lethargic and unhappy. After seeing an advertisement for the local Heart Foundation walking group I jumped at the chance to do some physical activity.”

The walking group, which has an average of eight participants each week, provided him with a lifeline as it enabled him to get out and about, socialising and getting fit at the same time.

“The walking group gives me an interest. It’s improved my fitness, my ‘get up and go’ and I absolutely love the social aspect of the group, meeting other people and listening to their stories,”

There are Heart Foundation walking groups located all around Salisbury. Join as a walker or volunteer your time to help lead or assist a group.
