Celebrating our volunteers
National Volunteer Week runs from 19 to 25 May, and the City of Salisbury extends its heartfelt thanks to the incredible volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to supporting our community.
With more than 300 volunteers involved in Council initiatives – and many more across the wider community, their efforts make a lasting difference. From lending a hand in local centres to supporting events and services, our volunteers strengthen our city in countless ways.
Hospitality volunteer Lee Hughes, who has been with the Jack Young Centre kitchen team for three years, says volunteering has transformed her retirement.
‘When I started, I’d been retired for around two and a half years and every day was feeling the same. I needed to shake things up and make my weeks more interesting – and do more things independently as my husband and I get older,’ she said.
Volunteering not only enriches our community but can also bring connection and purpose to those who give their time.
Asked why she continues, Lee said, ‘Friendship and companionship. It feels like a real family here. I’ve learned so much more about what’s on offer in Salisbury, and how culturally diverse the community is – which I love. I’ve never once thought I don’t want to go.’
Volunteers like Lee work hard to ensure community members are supported and greeted with a smile. Having seen the great and varied work of many volunteers in her time at Council, Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM expressed her thanks.

I am deeply grateful to all our hardworking volunteers. I’m constantly in awe of the way you support our community – often without realising the impact you make. To every volunteer across our city, thank you. The work you do makes a real difference in people’s lives, and we couldn’t do it without you.
