Excelling Welcoming City

City of Salisbury recognised as an Excelling Welcoming City

City of Salisbury has become the second Australian council to be recognised as an Excelling Welcoming City, the highest tier attainable within the Welcoming Cities framework.

This recognition as an Excelling Welcoming City is a proud moment for the City of Salisbury – it reflects the values our community lives every day. We are a city that opens its arms, values diversity and creates spaces where everyone feels they belong.

While many local governments participate, very few advance through the accreditation stage, making City of Salisbury a national leader.

The Welcoming Cities report commended the Council for its strong commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community for people of all cultural backgrounds, faiths, and ethnicities.

To be just the second council in the country to achieve this level of recognition shows how serious we are about building a truly inclusive community. Not just in words, but in action.

We invest in programs that connect new arrivals with services, jobs and community groups. We support intercultural celebrations, provide translation and outreach services, and ensure our libraries, community centres and clubs are places where everyone feels welcome.

This new status acknowledges the City’s leadership in promoting social, cultural and economic inclusion, and highlights Council’s role as a key contributor and influencer within the broader Welcoming Cities network.

The assessment covered six key standards: Leadership, Social and Cultural Inclusion, Economic Development, Learning and Skills, Civic Participation, and Places and Spaces. The accreditation trophy was formally presented at the Council meeting last night, Monday 23 June.

This significant achievement builds on City of Salisbury’s 2021 accreditation as an Intercultural City by the Council of Europe, further solidifying its status as a national leader in inclusion.
