Video Game Prototyping Workshop

Join Catalyst Games as you explore game design and creating your very own game prototype.

Whether you’re a total beginner or have some experience, you’ll get to deep dive into the exciting process of making games with the help of an experienced game designer.

What is covered over the 4 sessions:

  1. Starting with Game Mechanics
We’ll kick things off by talking about game mechanics—how games work—focusing on what interests you most. You’ll choose one idea to explore and create a simple paper prototype, going through two rounds of testing and improving it with our support.
  2. Building Core Gameplay Loops
Next, we’ll take your prototype to the next level by adding a core gameplay loop. This is the “heartbeat” of your game—how the mechanics connect and interact. You’ll see your game start to feel more real as we focus on how it all works together.
  3. World-Building Magic
After a quick break, it’s time to add some personality to your game! We’ll dive into world-building, creating a fun and interesting world that fits with your game’s mechanics. This part is all about making your game stand out and feel exciting to play.
  4. From Prototype to Next Steps
In the final part of the workshop, we’ll explore what happens after you’ve made a game. You’ll think about who your game is for, what platform it might be on, and how it could grow if you wanted to develop it further. We’ll finish up by playing each other’s prototypes, sharing ideas, and having some fun.

We also explore some traditional board games like snakes and ladders and seeing what happens when the rules are changed and additional mechanics to see what changes and what the new user experience is like.
