Council Meetings

All members of the public are welcome to attend any of the formal meetings of Council.

Meetings Open to the Public

All members of the public are welcome to attend meetings of Council. This includes Council meetings, Committees, Sub-Committee meetings and Informal Gatherings. Information about each of the meetings of Council is included below and more detailed information is available at Council Committees.

Occasionally, exceptional circumstances make it necessary for the Council or a Committee to discuss a matter in private. Items that may be discussed in private (in confidence) include those that concern personal affairs or legal issues or those that have commercial implications for Council. The Local Government Act sets out what factors may be considered in closing a meeting to the public.  The meeting agenda will identify those items where it may be necessary to discuss them in confidence.

All members of the public are required to leave the meeting while a confidential item is discussed. Items that Council has determined are confidential are discussed at the end of each meeting so as to not inconvenience members of the public.

Public Participation

There are several ways in which members of the public can make their views known or heard in Council. These include letters or petitions to Council. An individual or group can also request a deputation to address a meeting of Council or one of its Committees on a particular issue or ask questions to a full meeting of Council, known as Public Question Time. Such requests or petitions should be made in writing, addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, at least one week before the meeting.

While members of the public are welcome to attend all meetings, they can't participate in the debate at meetings.

Members of the public do not need to stay for the whole meeting, but may leave quietly at any time.

Council Meetings

Council meets on the fourth Monday of each month at 6.30pm. All meetings are held at the Council offices, 12 James Street, Salisbury. If a meeting falls on a public holiday, it will be held on the day after the public holiday.

Copies of the meeting agenda and papers are available by searching this site, or at the Council offices.

Committees

Council has six Standing Committees, formed under Section 41 of the Local Government Act, that provide advice to Council. See Council Committees for more information. The Sport, Recreation and Grants Committee meets on the second Monday of each month, with the Policy and Planning, Budget and Finance, Resources and Governance and Works and Services Committees meeting on the third Monday of each month. The Audit Committee of Council meets four times a year as required.

Should there be a public holiday on a scheduled meeting day, the meeting will be held on the next day.

There are also a number of Sub Committees that support the work of the Committees. Sub Committees usually meet on the second Monday and Tuesday of the month unless otherwise indicated.

Copies of Committee Agenda's and Minutes are available by searching this site, or at the Council offices.
