Community Libraries Library Services Justice Of The Peace

Justice of the Peace

A Justice of the Peace (JP) is authorised to witness and attest many documents, such as statutory declarations, affidavits, divorce documents, power of attorney and guardianship documents, as well as certify copies of original documents. JPs are volunteers who offer their time freely and may not be available at all times.

Certification of documents

You must have the original documents in order to have copies certified.

Due to recent changes in Justice of the Peace Services regulations, all witnessing of documents, with the exception of certifying true copies, require presentation of photo ID.

In order to be fair to all, and not cause delays, the Justice of the Peace may only certify up to fifteen (15) copies of any single or multiple document(s) at one time if other clients are waiting.

If you require more than fifteen (15) copies to be certified you can either:

  • Leave your documents with the JP to be picked up at a later time
  • Re-queue while the JP attends to other waiting clients
  • Go to the South Australian Justice of the Peace roll which will direct you to a JP in your area.
