The former Mawson Lakes Sales Centre was successfully relocated to the picturesque Greenfields Wetlands in April 2006 and renamed ‘The Watershed' – chosen to reflect the fact that this building represents a defining moment or turning point in the community's attitude to sustainability, as well as referring to its watery setting.

The Watershed features a café and function centre with an outside viewing deck. It also serves as the entry point for 2 km of wetlands walking trails.

The Watershed is also the home base for NRM (Natural Resources Management) Education Officers who provide programs for schools that are interested in exploring environmental sustainability, indcluding the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative-SA and Engaging with Nature..

The Watershed also showcases the regions' numerous achievements in water and environmental management and over time will expand its role as an education centre, promoting ways in which the community can move towards greater harmony with the natural environment by:

  • explaining the impact that our current way of living has on our natural environment
  • demonstrating the importance of the biodiversity in our soil, water and air ecosystems that provide us with a healthy natural environment in which to live
  • showcasing the great initiatives that are already underway to reduce our impact
  • highlighting what else we can do, as individuals and as a community, to minimise our impact on local ecosystems
