Borrowing from the Library

Books on a shelf

Our Libraries have a vast collection of resources that library members can borrow, free of charge. To borrow items, you need to have a current library card. Membership is free but you need to provide proof of your name, residential address and signature. When joining children under 18, proof of legal guardianship is also required. Loan limits apply and may vary depending on the resource being borrowed. The library will only restrict borrowing according to Australian Government classifications.

Reserving items

You can reserve items from all public libraries throughout the state or on loan, and collect them from your library branch of choice. You can place reservations online via the library catalogue (login to My Account) or a staff member can do it on your behalf. You’ll be notified by email, SMS or post when your reserved items are available for collection.

Renewing loans

To extend the borrowing time on your item/s and avoid incurring a late fee of $2, your items can be renewed online via the library catalogue before they’re due (login to My Account) or by a staff member on your behalf. Your items can't be renewed if other members have reserved them, or if you’ve received a late notice and already incurred a $2 late fee.

Late fees

A $2 late fee will be incurred when your items become unreasonably overdue. This fee is applied each time a late notice is generated. To avoid late fees, we encourage you to renew your borrowed items before they’re due, and to keep track of what you’ve borrowed. You can do this  online via the library catalogue (login to My Account) or by referring to the printout received at the time of borrowing. The printout shows all the items you’ve borrowed during that transaction.

Returning loans

Your borrowed items can be returned to any Public Library with the exception of toys, games and sports equipment which must be returned to the library from which they were borrowed. Items can be returned via the RFID self-check kiosks, shelves or the chutes, or in one of the after hours chutes located at the Len Beadell and Mawson Lakes Libraries. A library card is required to access these chutes. An additional after hours returns facility is available in the Ingle Farm Recreation Centre during their opening hours only, and doesn’t require a library card to access.
