Just Too Deadly Awards

What do the Just Too Deadly Awards celebrate?

The ‘Just Too Deadly' Learning Achievement Awards were developed in 2003 by the City of Salisbury to promote and celebrate, in a culturally appropriate way, the efforts and achievements of young Aboriginal and Islander people in education in the Northern region. Since 2006 it has been hosted jointly by the City of Salisbury, the City of Playford, Blue Light Elizabeth and the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS).

Locally known as the Deadly's, the Awards recognise students who have completed the milestones of Year 7 and Year 12/13 schooling within the City of Salisbury and the City of Playford.

The Deadly's are an important factor in the serious issue of retention of Indigenous students in education in the North. The aim of the Deadly's is to encourage young Indigenous people to remain engaged in learning, to promote education as positive, desirable, and a cause for celebration; and to support belief in the Indigenous community about the value of learning.

The celebration is a casual family barbecue held at the Salisbury Recreation Precinct (formally the Salisbury Swimming Centre). Each student receives a certificate from their Mayor and a shirt with names of the Year 7 and 12/13 graduates of that year.

All Aboriginal and Islander Students from public and private schools within Salisbury and Playford Councils receive the awards. The celebration is a family oriented event, which attracts over 500 community members to support and encourage learning.

A working party with representatives from the City of Salisbury, the City of Playford, Blue Light Elizabeth and the Department of Education and Children's Services (DECS) and other local Aboriginal and Indigenous organisations are responsible for the development of the event each year.
